The JCA Literary Agency was founded
in 1978 by John Cushman. After his death, JCA was then managed by
his wife, Jane Cushman, until her death in 1998. JCA is still a
family business, now run by their son, Tom Cushman, and his wife,
Melanie Meyers Cushman.
Since the agency’s founding, JCA
has represented authors in many different genres, building a client
base grounded in both fiction and non-fiction. Over the past 27
years, we have been the agents for best selling and prize winning
non-fiction such as Robert Lacey’s Ford: The Man and the Machine, David Garrow’s Bearing the Cross, and Richard Rhodes’ Pulitzer Prize
winning The Making of the Atomic Bomb. We have represented
Edgar-Award winning mystery writers Brian Garfield and David Ellis,
as well as best-selling true crime author Joyce Egginton, and her
NYT best seller From Cradle to Grave. We have also represented prize
winning works of literary fiction such as A Lesson Before Dying, the
#1 NYT bestseller and National Book Critics Circle Award Winner by
Ernest J. Gaines. We also represented W.E.B. Griffin’s bestselling military fiction series.
At JCA we represent writers in
many genres. Our particular areas of specialty are mysteries, crime
and suspense fiction (including true crime), literary fiction,
serious non-fiction of all types, as well as young adult materials
(no children’s books, YA only). We do not represent science fiction,
fantasy, or screenplays.
